The Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) has raised alarms over proposed tariffs on imported commercial aircraft, jet engines, and parts, arguing they could jeopardize air safety and disrupt supply chains. In a June 3 filing, the AIA urged the Commerce Department to extend the public comment period on Section 232 investigations by 90 days and delay any new tariffs for at least 180 days.

Industry representatives, including major players like Boeing, Airbus, RTX, and GE Aerospace, warn that higher tariffs could have unintended consequences. They contend that increased costs WOULD weaken U.S. economic and national security while destabilizing the domestic aviation sector. The Commerce Department's Section 232 probe, launched in May, examines national security risks posed by imported goods.

Aviation stakeholders emphasize the need for broader consultation to ensure any tariffs align with genuine security concerns without compromising safety or supply chain integrity. The AIA's appeal underscores the delicate balance between trade policy and operational reliability in a high-stakes industry.
